Live From Opening Day -- Thoughts So Far
Well, the Orioles are up 2-0 in the second inning, and although it is not freezing, it's not warm either. I'm jammed in a seat, uncomfortable and there are people next to me wondering if I am sane for bringing my laptop to the game and trying to get my own personal (actual) work done & blog a little.
I have to do what I have to do.
Some thoughts:
* The crowd. I have never seen Camden Yards as empty as is now for Opening Day. There cannot be more than 33-35,000 people here and there are large sections of the stadium (we are talking about rows upon rows) empty. It's shocking and in a way tragic as to how things have transpired the last few years. Let us hope we are not going down the road of a Pittsburgh. If that's one thing that's positive, the fans in attendance are lively.
* Aubrey Huff. Did he ever get it -- good lord. The booing by the home crowd was bad, I'd say 95% of the fans did it. He'! d better start producing, or it will never end. I'm sure a 40 home run year will get him back into the good graces of fans.
* Kevin Millar. He repeated his dance from last year, and added his kind of poor attempt at the moonwalk.
* The scoreboard looks great; however, I am not a big fan of the fonts used, it's like someone at home decided to use Verdana fonts, rather than something that stands out. The layout is splendid though.
I'm not going to do the picture thing until I get home...

How Sarah Palin could not pick out the subtle clues that this might be a prank call has just showed me she does not have the fitness to be second-in-command.

Brian Roberts & Around The Blogosphere
At this point, with the reality of Mark Teixeira not being signed by Baltimore, the question that many have asked is what will happen to Brian Roberts?As most of us know, the Baltimore Orioles are in the rebuilding stage and have has eleven straight losing seasons. Moreover, the team plays in the AL East, and with the Rays as defending division champs, and with the powerhouse Red Sox, along with the retooled Yankees, one must think the organization has the task of climbing Mount Everest.
Andy MacPhail -- despite the misgivings of a few fans -- I think has done a solid job in ! rebuilding the team. There's probably going to have a painful decision to be made with Roberts, and I think he will be traded before his contract is up.
I am going to fathom that Baltimore will offer him an extension, but he will turn it down for the fact he wants to play on a competitive team. His status will be one of many questions as Spring Training is only about seven-eight weeks away.
- The Sun's David Steele thinks O's fans should be grateful for the team not signing Mark Teixeira. After what I have seen the past two weeks, I think that's a fair assessment.
- Dean Jones Jr., of the Baltimore Sun thinks despite the team not signing Mark Teixeira, the future is bright for the organization and things may really not! be as bad it seems.
- It looks more and more that Mark ! Teixeira and the Yankees were made for each other states Roch Kubatko. Despite a good-faith effort by the Nationals, the slugger wanted to go to a winner and that spelled New York.
- Camden Chat expresses the O's have interest in Mark Hendrickson; the Loss Column has a an interesting take on the drama with Mark Teixeira, fandom and the economic system in baseball; the Roar from 34 pens a poem on Teixeira; Around the Harbor knew we had no chance with Mark Teixeira and HRB of Dempsey's Army thinks that the slugger is not worth the money he got from New York; Oriole Central believes fans got coal in their stocking as the O's lost out on Teixeira as does Jay Trucker of the Examiner; The Wayward O believes that Teixeira is just flat out greedy; finally, Joe Posnanski has a great piece on the entire Mark Teixeira saga.
Ty Wigginton an Oriole
It looks like the bench situation with the Orioles has now only become more complicated. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has reported that Baltimore and Ty Wigginton have agreed to a two-year deal. The Orioles have signed free-agent Ty Wigginton to a two-year contract, according to a major-league source.
Wigginton hit .285 with 23 home runs and 58 RBIs with the Astros last season.
Wigginton likely will serve as a right-handed hitting first baseman and DH, replacing free agent Kevin Millar.
He also will back up Melvin Mora at third base.
His flexibility -- along with that of Ryan Freel, whom the Orioles acquired earlier this off-season -- creates additional options both in the team's lineup and in the field.

Adam Eaton Signs with Baltimore
The Baltimore Orioles have a new addition to their team as veteran Adam Eaton -- who was released from the Phillies a few days ago -- has signed a minor league with Baltimore. Unless Eaton is just plain awful in Spring Training, I would surmise that he will have a spot on the squad and perhaps be slotted as a starter.

Baez, Jones Delivers, O's Down Nats, 4-2; Eaton Finally Gone (With Photos)
In life and as in baseball, there are times when it is full of surprises, and last night in Washington D.C. was no exception. If one was a betting man, would you have thought Danys Baez would ever serve as an offensive hero at all? Well, Baez's first major league single ignited a two-out rally in the 12th inning that setup the winning run as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Washington Nationals, 4-2, in the so-called "Battle of the Beltways".
After Baez's single -- it was more like a fluke swinging bunt that barely got 20 feet past the mound and Baez (for a guy his size) ran hard to first -- Brian Roberts followed up with a double, and Adam Jones hit a two-run double to make the difference on Friday night. Jones, who came back during the Yankee series due to a sore hamstring, was the offensive star of the game with 3 RBI's and three hits.
O's Win Against Yankees; Derek Jeter Passes Lou Gehrig as All-Time Yankees Hit Leader...
The eyes of the baseball world were on the Bronx last night as history -- depending on your perspective -- was made.
Derek Jeter finally became the all-time Yankee hit leader passing Lou Gehrig with a third inning single of Baltimore's Chris Tillman; however, the Orioles would spoil the momentous evening for New York fans by jumping all over their bullpen. Down 4-1 at the start of the fifth inning, the Orioles would score nine runs off a shaky New York bullpen and emerge victorious, 10-4, over the Yankees. Damaso Marte, who pitched in relief took the loss for New York, as Andy Pettitte started on the mound for New York, but left after five innings and didn't factor into the decision.
The Orioles endured two crazy rain delays -- one at the beginning, the other in the seventh inning -- to earn the win. Tillman -- who started the game for Baltimore on the mound -- earned the win as he went five innings and gave up four runs, while Mark Hendrickson pitched three innings of shutout relief for his first save of the season.

Gary Roberts Retiring
According to Bob McKenzie of TSN:
Gary Roberts' NHL career is over.
Unclaimed on waivers on trade deadline day, the 42-year-old veteran will not play another game with the Tampa Bay Lightning this season. He had already announced that he would retire at the end of this season.
A formal announcement of Roberts' retirement is expected from the Lightning.
I was actually surprised that someone didn't pick him up off of waivers for the final stretch and possibly the playoffs. He's one of the true warriors to have played in the NHL.

Fedorov To KHL Confirmed & Brashear to Leave Caps?
According to Capitals Insider :
According to three reports out of Russia this morning, Sergei Fedorov's NHL career is officially over. The 39-year-old ended more than a month of speculation about his future and has reportedly signed a two-year deal with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL.The deal is reportedly for two years at $3.8 million per season.
Magnitogorsk has also! announced the signing on their Web site. [It's in Russian so I'm assuming that Capitals Insider had it translated for them - for all I know the "report" is an advertisement for a local circus]
In other Capitals news, Donald Brashear's days with the team may be numbered. Brashear who will be a UFA on July 1st told The Washington Post that he has not been offered a contract extension by the Capitals and that he expects to hit the open market next week. [Link]

The rumor that Detroit was bringing Todd Bertuzzi back for another stint as a Red Wing started over the weekend [follow progress here].
Today the Detroit Red Wings announced that they had signed Bertuzzi to a one year deal (which CapGeek reports is worth $1.5M)

Saha Not Coming To Spurs

Louis Saha, Manchester United's £12.75 million buy from Fulham has been reportedly made available by Alex Ferguson on a year-long loan.
Reports are rampant that Spurs have made a bid for the 27-year old French international. THBN has sources inside the Spurs camp which have totally rubbished these claims.
Saha will probably go back to France for a year.
Capel Infuriates Sevilla
Spanish sports paper, Marca, had stated this morning that Sevilla's left winger, Diego Capel, was "happy at the club".Yet, in a strange turn of events, Capel has made a u-turn on this mornings comments by telling his agent to "get him a move to another club before the start of the season", according to Marca.
These remarks have angered Sevilla president, José María del Nido, to the point where he has gone on record to state that "Diego Capel has been fined 15 days pay, and has been asked to remain at home tomorrow and on Wednesday."
The firery Sevilla president also went on to say that "Tottenham Hotspur made an enquiry a few weeks ago. We declined to even talk with them as there are ongoing legal matters that need to be addressed between the two clubs (possibly the Juande Ramos move to Spurs).
"Another club also enquired about Diego. Many clubs enquire about a lot of our players. This is natural as we have a lot of talent in our squad.
"Diego Capel is a Sevilla player and will remain a Sevilla player until May 2012 as that is the contract expiry on his current agreement with us. Diego may even stay at the club longer than his contract expiry, who knows?"
What was the response ! of Diego Capel's agent?
"Diego [Capel] has made his mind up on where he wants to be playing his football next season. I can say that it will not be with Sevilla FC."
Rene Ramos also went on to add;
"There are a lot of formalities that we will have to look at before Diego [Capel] can leave Sevilla. Diego wants to progress in his profession and feels that the time is right for his training to advance to another level".
We just hope that Diego Capel has decided to come to Spurs.
As a lot of clubs have come to realise (especially this summer), you can't hold onto a player when they clearly do not want to play for you.

Defoe on show - Spurs 4-1 Burnley
Spurs ran out 4-1 winners against Burnley in the first leg semi-final at White Hart Lane.
Goals from Dawson, O'Hara, Pavlyuchenko and an own goal from Burnley, wrapped the game up and set us on our way for the second leg.
The team had no balance in the first half and Burnley took the game to us, scoring in the 15th minute. After some heavy duty blowdryer treatment from Redknapp in the changing room, and the introduction of O'Hara for Bentley, the boys went on to produce a thrilling second half.
Jermain Defoe was also presented to us at but I was shocked at some of the booing that I could hear in the East stand and in some other quadrants of the ground. Can anyone care to explain why some of us were booing??

MILAN - Ketenangan Milan di geliat bursa transfer ini tak terlepas dari sikap Leonardo yang juga adem ayem. Pelatih anyar Milan itu memag sengaja melakukannya.Selain karena masih banyak waktu tersisa dibukanya jendela transfer, Leonardo juga masih memilah-milah pemain mana yang pantas mengisi skuadnya kelak. "Kami harus memahami, tidak hanya pada sistemnya, tapi pada taktik bermain kami nanti.
Juga pada bagaimana pemain bisa menerapkan ide yang kami miliki dan kami masih harus menunggu," tandasnya kepada Sky Sport 24. "Pasar transfer juga masih terbuka hingga 31 A! gustus.

MILAN - Meski negoisasi kepindahan Luis Fabiano antara AC Milan dengan Sevilla berjalan alot. Namun pelatih Milan Leonardo yakin Fabiano akan pindah ke San Siro. Sejak bursa musim panas digelar, AC Milan menegaskan pemain Sevilla Luis Fabiano menjadi target utama. Dalam perjalanan negoisasi antara kedua kubu, harga masih menjadi kendala. Terutama tawaran harga 14 juta euro dari Milan yang masih ditolak Sevilla. Meski begitu, pelatih Milan Leonardo yakin, nantinya Fabiano dapat berlabuh ke San Siro. "Fabiano jelas pemain hebat, ia striker timnas Brasil dan kini negoisas! i dengan timnya sedang berjalan," kata Leonardo seperti dikutip situs resmi Milan.
"Saya rasa ini bukan pertaruhan. Milan tak hanya membeli nama di bursa transfer. Jika kita melakukan, karena kami membutuhkan tenaganya. Tapi kami sendiri memiliki tim yang kuat, jadi tak perlu terburu-buru."
Selain negoisasi dengan Sevilla, Leonardo juga menegaskan akan bergabungnya David Beckham pada Januari tahun depan, setelah berhasil memperkuat Milan selama enam bulan pada musim lalu. "Bersama kami, (David) Beckham memiliki rapor yang bagus.

MILAN - AC Milan melanjutkan pencariannya untuk mendapatkan striker terbaik. Kali ini, pilihannya mengarah pada striker AS Roma dan timnas Brasil, Julio Baptista. Untuk memboyong Baptista ke San Siro, Milan dikabarkan telah menyiapkan anggaran £8 juta plus pertukaran Ignazio Abate."Kedua pihak telah melakukan kontak, dengan terlebih dahulu melakukan pembicaraan yang berlangsung secara bersahaja," tulis laporan Il Corriere dello Sport. Rafa ready to dent Blues
The Reds travel to London to take on their fierce rivals in determined mood as they aim to respond to critics who have already questioned their 2009/10 credentials.
Defeats to Tottenham and Aston Villa have already rocked Benitez's plans and allowed the doom-mongers to congregate around Anfield before August had come to an end.
But Liverpool have since stabilised in the league and their boss is adamant that there will still be plenty of twists in the battle for silverware as he aims to add pressure on Chelsea, who lost at Wigan last weekend.
Benitez told Sky Sports News: "It is always important when you play against the top sides because it can make a big difference.

"But you never know. It is important to do the right things and if you can win it is fantastic. If not, you have to keep going. It is an important game for both teams."
He added: "If we can win, it will be two defeats in a row for them. But my! idea is always the same, it is a long race and there is still much to play."
Benitez heavily criticised his players in midweek following a comprehensive defeat at Fiorentina in the UEFA Champions League and he is expecting a reaction on Sunday.
But the former Valencia chief is also wary that Chelsea, who were unbeaten before their setback at Wigan, are looking to rediscover top gear.
He said: "Both teams will be desperate to win so we will hopefully see a good game. You always have to go with the idea that you can win."
Memorable
Benitez is set to renew rivalries with Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti on Sunday after twice crossing swords with the ex-AC Milan manager in UEFA Champions League finals.
Liverpool memorably got the better of Milan in 2005 in arguably the best European Cup final in history, however, Ancelotti's side gained revenge in 2007.
Benitez is therefore expecting another intriguing e! ncounter with the Italian, saying: "It will be interesting bec! ause he is a great manager.
"We have played in the finals and, OK, it will be good to see him and hopefully we will see him again in another final.
"He knows how to manage a top side. He has experience at AC Milan where he did really well and here he is now doing a very good job with good players."
But Benitez - who has been critical in the past of the tactics from the Blues under former bosses Jose Mourinho, Avram Grant and Luiz Felipe Scolari - does not think Ancelotti has had a radical impact.
When asked if he had noticed any difference in Chelsea's approach this season, he said: "Not too much. He has changed the shape of the team a bit, but the style of football is similar."

QUARESMA AL CHELSEA PER ARRIVARE A DROGBA
Quaresma lascia l'Inter per l'Inghilterra. La destinazione del portoghese non è però il Tottenham, come si ipotizzava nelle ultime ore. E' il Chelsea in realtà ad aver raggiunto in extremis l'accordo col club di via Durini. Quaresma passa ai Blues in prestito fino a giugno. L'Inter, su precisazione indicazione di Mourinho, aveva acquistato in estate il giocatore dal Porto per 25 milioni di euro, cifra che comprende il cartellino di Pelè.
Domenica, col Torino, l'ultima di una lunga serie di bocciature per il portoghese, mai convincente in questi mesi trascorsi ad Appiano Gentile. Beckham, per prolungare la sua avventura ! milanese, ha deciso di rinunciare a parte dell'ingaggio, aiutando così il Milan ad accontentare le richieste dei Los Angeles Galaxy. A gennaio 2010, quando scadrà il contratto con gli americani, il centrocampista sarà libero di ritornare a Milano, questa volta definitivamente e con tutta la famiglia.
GALLIANI SUL MOMENTO NEGATIVO DEL MILAN

GALLIANI SULLE PROVOCAZIONI DI MOU
Alla domanda se Mourinho gli stia ancora simpatico dopo gli attacchi ai rossoneri, Galliani ha preferito rimandare: "Rispondo la prossima volta", ha detto arrivando in Lega. Mascherano admits his commitment for the club
Javier Mascherano has admitted that he is very much committed to Liverpool Football Club and is all guns blazing to fight for the title this year.
It is good to hear the commitment from the player itself.Liverpool don't want to loose Mascherano at any cost especially after loosing Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid.
Mascherano said: "Barcelona contacted my agents regarding a possible move.
"But I have always been a professional and have never left a club high and dr! y, and I was not going to do that this time with Liverpool.
"I will always value the fact Benitez took a chance on me when neither Carlos Tevez nor I were being given chances at West Ham.
"Benitez is someone who is very serious and clear. He spoke with me and told me I was a key player, and that I could not abandon the club just for financial reasons."
Mascherano, who played in Argentina's 3-2 win in Russia in midweek, admits his head was turned by Barca's advances.
But he added: "When Xabi Alonso left for Real Madrid I knew that me also leaving was impossible, but I had already made a commitment with Rafa to stay 100 per cent with the project.
"Last year we were so close to being champions and we'll be back in the title fight again."
